Which way is up progress by CaroleHumphreys Which way is up progress by CaroleHumphreys
My lack of progress over seven years ...
I have been putting in the work on several paintings in the hope I'll have something finished for an exhibition in September (slim hope of that happening ... I blame having to work for a living).
For reference, I used three stock images by brilliant artist Odessa Sawyer (sadly she has closed her stock account).
The painting has gone through many rethinks over the years.  I did work up a paler background, added flowers, got rid of the flowers, painted the background in several colours, then eventually settled for the ladies reclining on my favourite burgundy quilt cover.  A lot of surgery has gone on from time to time with heads and arms. I've decided to add rose petals (and that rose will get a bit more work, promise!).  I'm currently in the process of reworking the flesh tones.  The dresses haven't been worked up much yet, ditto the hair and hands.

Looks like its coming along very nicely! I'm a total novice painter (looking to change that soon ;)) so can't offer meaningful critiques yet :)

I'm a bit of a novice too and I need to be more methodical in my approach.  All the best with your endeavours into painting, and thanks for the compliment :)

I have a couple of these. They just refuse to come out right no matter what I do. I put them away for a time then go back. Don't give up!

Thank you Maria.  Painting is certainly a challenge for me (finishing them especially) :D

It'll be a nice painting. I think you need to decide on a light direction, as this will make it more unified-looking. It's probably different in all your different reference images, so it might be an idea not to follow these for the lighting and only for the forms (the outlines an key points). The upper two faces both seem to be lit from below, which tends to be the least flattering arrangement, and obviously that would be unlikely here as the figures are lying from different sides. Just a thought, I could be wrong...

No you're right - I did try to change the lighting on the bottom figure at one stage, then changed it back.  It probably needs to be the figure that dictates the light direction for the others.  It's been tricky as the bottom figure reference had little indication of where the arms might go/end and I've had to invent those parts; I hadn't thought too much about the lighting there either.

The bottom figure is the most pleasing, so far, certainly. Probably lighting the whole thing basically from the top of the canvas would be the optimum (although without the light source being too strong). The biggest mistake I make is to leave it too late deciding what the lighting should be. The whole picture should be lighting.
