I began this painting in 2007 (yes, I'm a slow worker!). It's in oils and I'm afraid I had trouble getting a good shot of it, if I can, I'll upload a better shot later.

The images I used as reference were taken from a series which looked very much like this in fact, this looks like the image used for the middle mermaid a bit, except her arms were not out. Sorry I can't provide direct links, they are no longer available.

Work in progress images: You will see from these that I had some major rethinks over the mermaid in the foreground.

I'm slow too, so I can relate! :D I'm glad you finished it, it came out great. And I don't know what the previous commenter is talking about, the composition is just fine.

Thank you Maria.  I did wonder about that previous comment.  I think some people like to leave negative comments for the sake of it.  It's an odd thing to do.  :)

Absolutely beautiful colour and movement. Good rethink on the mermaid in the foreground too. She was originally looking directly at the observer and I think you rightly judged it to be wrong for this particular scene.

Very nicely done. Very fine work indeed. So it should be, being six years in the making! An average production rate of one mermie a year if you count the figurehead. Or, to put it another way two years longer than it took Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel... Still, you've had your distractions. Got there in the end! Congratulations!

Thanks Gordon.  Thankfully I've not been commissioned to do the Sistine Chapel :faint: It was a tall enough order doing the St Pete painting. :D

Just as well, averaging one figure a year it would have taken 300 years.  You would have had a terribly stiff neck by 1812. ;) And you wouldn't be able to smoke on the job or everyone would keep thinking they'd elected a new pope.

To echo Terry Pratchett, mermaids are graceful, gorgeous and sexy, but nice??  Not on you life.
